Blackbutt Timber
Blackbutt is an Australian hardwood that grows in New South Wales and parts of southern Queensland. It’s a versatile timber that is used by architects and designers for both interiors and exteriors. Because of its durability and resistance to termites, Blackbutt timber is often used for timber cladding on exterior walls. Many modern buildings use Blackbutt cladding to blend in with the surrounding environment.
Benefits of using blackbutt timber
Aside from its versatility, Blackbutt has some beneficial properties including being resistant to termites and not susceptible to lyctid – a beetle that attacks timber. This makes Blackbutt ideal for exterior use, and because it grows in Australia, the timber is readily available. There is also a wide range of finishes to choose from, making it a popular choice for interior designers and homeowners.

Applications
Blackbutt timber is used for a variety of decorative features in both interiors and exteriors. Because of its durability and stunning looks, Blackbutt is often used for exterior cladding. But the timber’s resistance to termites and lyctid borers makes it also a great option for interior use. This includes Blackbutt flooring, panelling, battens, and interior cladding on walls and ceilings.

Blackbutt Finishes
We offer a wide range of Blackbutt timber finishes that suit both interiors and exteriors. Our Unfinished option enhances the timber’s natural raw look and can be placed both inside and outside. Enviro Clear has a glossier look and is made for interiors only, such as timber floors, panelling, and cladding. Our Clear Oil finish is similar to Enviro Clear, but is slightly darker in colour and can also be used for exteriors. Other options include Unfinished Fine Sawn, Fireshield, and Clear Oiled Fine Sawn.
Colour Variation
This hardwood timber ranges from golden yellow to pale brown and sometimes a slightly pinkish colour is present. Blackbutt has an even texture with straight grain features, making it a popular choice for interior applications.
Natural Features
Some Blackbutt timber may have small gum veins and interlocked grain features, but the average Blackbutt is golden yellow to pale brown with straight grain features. Depending on the finish selected these natural features may be enhanced or diminished.
Blackbutt Timber Properties
Blackbutt hardwood is extremely durable and makes a great timber for exterior use. Other key properties include its resistance to termites and lyctid borer.
